Five books that traveled to the coast with me

A woman reading a paperback on a train window seat in afternoon light

I am incapable of packing light, and books are where it shows. Here are the ones that earned their place.

Two of them I finished on trains, one I abandoned on page forty and picked back up in a laundrette, and one I read twice because the second half rearranged the first.

The one I keep pressing on people

A slim novel about a family that never says the important thing out loud. I underlined so much of it that the underlining stopped meaning anything, which is its own kind of review.

Still on the pile

  • The essay collection everyone quotes and nobody finishes.
  • A cookbook I read like a novel.
  • Something long, saved for the winter.
